Have Y’all been seeing those snapchats of people getting into these “tank” like contraptions of freeeeeezing cold air?? aka cryotherapy?
For about 3 years I’ve been really intrigued about cryotherapy because of all the health benefits that come with it. What kept me from trying it though was that I didn’t know anyone personally who had done it, I wasn’t sure where to go, and I was honestly kind of intimidated by the whole thing and didn’t want to go alone.
A few weeks ago though, my friend mentioned that she’d been wanting to try it out and I thought this was finally my opportunity to try it out!
Before I get into my experience, let’s talk about the benefits of cryotherapy and why anyone would even subject themselves to these freezing temperatures.
Think of cryotherapy like an ice bath that athletes do. The difference is though that instead of having to soak for 10-15 minutes, you just have to do it for 3 minutes and it’s a different type of cold that doesn’t feel as harsh. It’s the difference between wet cold and dry cold.

Here’s a little bit about my experience…
There were two main reasons why I was excited to try cryotherapy beyond just my curiosity.
The first was because I have chronic shoulder pain – I have to go to the chiropractor for it about 1-2 times per month and second because I wanted that boost of energy.
We went to Bare Med Spa in Kansas City (the Power and Light location) and we were in for a special surprise when they told us in June they were running a $25 cryotherapy promo. Can’t complain about that price point.
So here’s how it worked. I went into the cryotherapy room and had to put on a robe and socks up to my knees and gloves (because your extremities would be sensitive to these temperatures). Literally, that is all you wear.
So then you wait until the machine hits a certain temperature and you walk inside and in the privacy of the “tank’s” door closed you take off the robe. And you stand there for 3 minutes as the temperature, drops and drops and drops.
And it gets COLD. I was doing like a little dance while in it and talking to my friend and the staff member running the machine. Had I not had those distractions, it would have been tough. At the same time though, I’m that person who’s working out and am like “ok I can do anything for a minute if I just breathe”
After the 3 minutes were up, I put the robe back on and the walked out of it. AND OMG I FELT COLD. I felt energized by my legs really felt it and almost felt kind of tingly.
One of the benefits of cryotherapy is that it does give you a boost of energy the day of. The week leading up to it, I had a super busy week and hadn’t been sleeping very well so by the time I got there I was pretty exhausted. Essentially the energy boost brought me back to my normal level of energy.
I also had worked out a few times leading up and I definitely think it helped with the soreness.
Another benefit was that I seriously was ready to sleep like a baby that night afterward.
But, would I do it again?
I think yes. I read somewhere that for the best results you should go 3 times in one week and then after that go regularly but not as often. I feel like I want to try that so that I can REALLY feel the effects of it because I know so many people swear by it.
