Cinco de Mayo gets me every time. I love how it brings everyone together to kick off warm weather and the sunshine. Everyone’s wearing bright colors, the days are finally brighter longer, and everyone is ready to spend the evening outside.

With this though, of course, comes the inevitable hangover – especially at 27. Gone are the days of going out and feeling just as energized the next day. Nowadays I’ll go out and 2 days later I’m still feeling it.

Part of this, of course, is because I don’t drink as much as I used to. I’m pretty good at gauging my limit that will allow me to still wake up and feel good in the morning and I no longer feel the social pressure to keep up with everyone else.

And just like with everything else in my life, I have natural concoctions for my hangovers too. These are also really relevant for those days where you just feel dehydrated or sluggish.

Before getting into the 5 ways to naturally ease a hangover, of course, I have to start with the outfit deets!

I love Spring because it’s just the perfect temperature where I can pull off the sweater and shorts combo. It’s my favorite because it’s warm enough to be outside all day, but I still get the comfort of just throwing on a sweater and booties.

Y’all know the booties I’m wearing here from past outfit posts like this one with the camo jacket. They’re such a great heel height that they make great everyday shoes.

When I saw the olive pull on shorts  at Madewell, I knew I had to have them. Like it seriously doesn’t get more comfortable than these and olive is the best “colored” neutral ever! They’re also super versatile because I wore them two weekends ago with a fun top and heels to go out on a Saturday.

I LOVE anything comfy that you can dress up or down!

NOW, onto the hangover relief!

CHARCOAL

I’ve been a proponent of charcoal as a hangover antidote for about 3 years now and I have multiple uses for it.

The first is charcoal pills. I promise it’s not as scary as it sounds.

If I’ve drunk more than usual and know I need to be functional in the morning, I’ll take 1-2 charcoal pills before going to bed that night along with 1-2 FULL glasses of water. When taking charcoal pills, you have GOT to make sure it’s activated charcoal and coming from a reputable source.

If you forget to take your charcoal pills, then opting for charcoal lemonade the next morning will help you out too.

If you live in KC, Unbakery has a charcoal lemonade (and a drive-thru so you don’t even have to get out of the car). I also really love the one from Pressed Juicery.

Ok, so if you’re new to charcoal you’re probs wondering why this helps with hangovers.

Basically what charcoal does is it absorbs the toxins from your body (yep, acohol is one of those). Think of the charcoal as a magnet to the toxins and then it helps get it out of your system ASAP.

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Peppermint essential oil is a must for the days when you have a headache or feel nauseous. Which means you basically should always have this on hand if you’re hungover.

If you’re really not feeling well, you should sniff the oil and then rub it on the area that isn’t feeling well. Our bodies can absorb the oil both of those ways. It’s faster through smelling it, and takes a little bit more time to absorb through your skin, but double duty always works best.

EAT YOUR WATER

I love this one both on days where I’m feeling sluggish or a bit dehydrated, as well as hungover. Of course, you know how important it is to hydrate by drinking water, but you can take this to the next level by EATING your water.

What does that mean?

It means eating foods that have high water content to get that water inside you faster. My go to is a cucumber. I love slicing up a whole cucumber and adding apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper. SERIOUSLY MY FAVORITE SNACK EVER!!

Other hydrating foods:
– celery
– watermelon
– iceberg lettuce
– radishes
– tomatoes
– green peppers
– cauliflower
– spinach
– cantaloupe

KOMBUCHA

Kombucha is another fave of mine. Sometimes I like to make a cocktail itself with kombucha by adding vodka to it. Other times I drink it once I’ve decided I don’t want another alcoholic drink.

I always love how it helps settle my stomach in the morning and gives me a boost of energy.

Fermented foods (like kombucha) help you deal with the hangover because they have lots of vitamin B which tend to get depleted after a night of drinking. The probiotics in it help too, especially if you’re allergic to alcohol and your stomach needs extra good bacteria to keep you up and running!

And this one might just be my favorite, that I wholeheartedly regret not getting today (literally considering ordering it right now at 10 pm).

To me, pho can cure anything from a hangover to a bad day to a cold. 

I don’t have the science behind this, but Sam and I both swear by it. The assumption I can make is that the broth meat gives you a lot of protein and vitamins that help boost your system.
