Staying motivated isn’t the easiest thing in the world. Whether we come up with a genius idea and then 1 month later, we’ve taken few steps to make it happen or we’re just not feeling the mundane tasks ahead of us in the work day.
We’ve all been there. And when we seem to be finding ourselves there all too often, it means it’s time to change things up.
And before you say, “sounds great, but I don’t have time.” I’m calling BS. Maybe you don’t have 2 hours to get a massage, fine. I don’t really either. But, I bet you can find 10 minutes to sit in child’s pose or 3 minutes to write down the things you’re grateful for.
The goal of self-care isn’t for it to become one more thing on your to-do list, but to open up space for you to be your best self so that you can be the best sibling, parent, partner, co-worker you can be.
If you’re drained, overwhelmed, and tired then you simply can’t bring your best self to a situation.
Soooooo, did I convince you?!
One of the things that have always helped me with motivation is treating myself to something I enjoy like a walk or a sweet treat. What I didn’t realize (seriously I’ve been doing this since like college) is that this was a form of self-care or taking care of my needs first in order to perform the tasks, projects, homework, etc. that I need to do for myself or others.
Know your schedule
When you have those days that are probably going to be daunting or you have a big presentation and really have to be “on” all day, this is the time to schedule your self-care. Think about what it is that truly allows you to decompress. Maybe its ordering dinner in with your boyfriend and him having wine ready for when you get home, maybe it’s a massage, maybe it’s blocking off your evening so you can just make a bubble bath, read, and go to bed early.
It may take a little bit of planning ahead, but know that you have this waiting for you after your busy day is going to fire you up to be your best self during the day.
One of the easiest ways to find motivation through self-care is with gratitude. Simply remembering everything that you’re grateful for and the things that are to come that you’re grateful for is enough motivation to get you to finish a project or run the errands you’ve been putting off.
This is something that won’t take more than 3 minutes if you don’t want it to. You can write it in the notes on your phone, grab a notepad or a journal and start writing it all down.
The key here is to really feel into what you are writing down you are grateful for. When you take a moment to let yourself FEEL that thing that you are grateful for, you’re going to feel a shift of motivation to get things done!
Talk your friends or family
If you feel like it’s hard to take this time for yourself because you are afraid of coming off selfish or needy, it’s time to talk to your friends and family.
Chances are that they’re just seeing this from the surface and not seeing that you are taking time for yourself so that you can engage with them better.
If they are talking down on this still, it may be that it’s triggering something within them that’s making them realize that they need to be taking some time to take care of themselves too. It’s not your job to tell them that or take on their frustrations, but you could offer to have them join you for a walk or whatever you think they gravitate towards when it comes to decompressing.
When you no longer feel guilty about taking this time for yourself, you’ll be that much more motivated to do it!
Create a Morning or an Evening Ritual
By creating a morning or evening ritual, you can be sure that you have a self-care element covered in your day no matter what is in store for you over the majority of the day.
A morning self-care ritual will help you start your morning in a calm way that energizes you for what’s to come that day.
Some things you can do in the morning: drink hot water with lemon, yoga, meditate, take a few deep breaths, set your personal and work goals for the day.
An evening ritual will help you wind down so that you can get quality sleep to set yourself up for success the following day.
Some things you can do in the evening: take an Epsom salt bath or bubble bath, go to bed early, turn off your phone after a certain hour (or stop checking it), journal about your day
