I’ve been on a mission for about 10 years now to find natural and holistic ways to feel better and now I can add seeing an ayurvedic doctor to the list. After having my gallbladder removed when I was 13, my digestive system has always been a little wonky and I felt like I was always playing a guessing game with what food would affect me a certain way.

In high school, I started to dabble into acupuncture which helped a lot, but I stopped going once I went off to college.
Going to college in LA was what opened me up to all the other different holistic worlds out there. In a city that has a juice shop and yoga studio on every corner, it makes total sense that this kind of stuff is “mainstream” for LA standards.
Needless to say, whether it’s a shot of wheatgrass or a lymphatic massage, nothing really weirds me out anymore when it comes to feeling better and it’s mostly because of my time in LA.
This past fall, I started to have some crazy shoulder pain and was on the search for a wellness center in Kansas City where I could get it looked at.
I noticed that they had ayurvedic services which totally intrigued me.
I put it off though because of the price and needed to focus on getting the shoulder feeling better first which meant quite a few chiropractor appointments.
Ok, but what is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a natural medicine that is focused on balancing the body. It takes into account our daily lives and habits (diet, physical activity, emotion) and nature (seasons, weather).
Essentially, you make adjustments based on making sure that everything is balanced. For example, in the winter, if you’re feeling off, maybe you need to make sure you increase the amount of hot food and drink your taking in whereas in the summer you need more cooling foods.
You yourself inherently have different tendencies as well, and when you understand this part of your body, you can make decisions based on the external factors like weather, diet, etc.
What made me decide to go?
I’d been feeling off for a few months now and I knew it was in large part due to my diet and I knew it needed some tweaking. Because my birthday falls in January, I was already in the mode to think about what I want to improve this coming year and my diet was one of those.
I decided I was going to make it a non-negotiable to go for my birthday, and it would really excite me because I felt like I was already taking action.
So what did I learn?
One of the biggest takeaways I had was how the foods that I was heavily eating were giving me symptoms because I wasn’t balancing them out with something else. I LOOOOVE spicy and hot food and eat A LOT OF IT, but what I wasn’t doing was balancing it with cooling foods, so it was just becoming too much.
I really loved how it’s not about removing the things you enjoy from your diet, but just making it balanced.
And it can be so easy.
If I have something that is considered a hot food (doesn’t necessarily mean spicy or the temperature) it can be as simple as adding cilantro which is cooling.
The other takeaway was that it was an incredible reminder that I don’t have to settle for not feeling my optimal self….like cramps.
She asked me if I got cramps at all and I was like, yeah, but it’s manageable. I had a major lightbulb moment when she was like, but what if you didn’t suffer from cramps at all. Ding Ding Ding.
The other cool thing about ayurveda it’s all about feeling your very best, which means even if we don’t necessarily have pain or an ailment, by making a few adjustments we can realize how much more energy we may actually have or how much better sleep is possible.
