Kate Spade Bag // Elizabeth and James Tee // BCBG Skirt
Tory Burch Earrings (similar) // LC Lauren Conrad Heels // J.Crew Shirt
Since I moved to Los Angeles, I have found that my style has gotten a lot more casual. I find myself finding ways to dress down outfits. This black skirt has been a basic staple in my closet for years, but because I haven’t been getting super dressed up, it has found its way to the back of my closet. Over the weekend, it finally clicked for me on how to dress down a skirt like this. What better way to dress down an outfit than by substituting a blouse for a tee? TEXTILE by Elizabeth and James tees are so comfortable. I wear my happy tee and hashtag tee ALL the time. This grey tee is usually the tee that I reach for first, so it makes sense that this is what I chose to pair with the black skirt. Because it is still a little chilly out, I needed a layering piece that wasn’t going to be too heavy like a leather jacket would be. This is where the button down shirt came in. Everyone seems to have their favorite button down shirts. For years, my favorite have been J.Crew’s The Perfect Shirt. The one I wore here is the cotton version. This one is great for layering. I also have The Perfect Shirt in linen, which I love for wearing with skirts and trousers during the spring and summer.
How to dress down a skirt
Wear a t-shirt – Whether you’re trying to dress down a skirt or tailored trousers, a cute tee is always the way to go. Make sure the tee has the right proportions for the shirt. Because the tee I wore hear is a bit oversized, I couldn’t tuck it in because it would bunch up and I also couldn’t wear it untucked because it was too long. Solution? Knot it.
Layer – Layering can dress up and outfit, but it can also dress it down. With this outfit, a leather jacket would have dressed it up more while a cotton button down shirt creates a more casual look.
Casual Fabrics – Fabric is everything when you are trying to dress something up or down. silk = dressy and cotton = casual. Had I worn this skirt with a silk blouse or top, it definitely would have been more of a night out look.
I’d love to know…What is your favorite button down shirt?
